Safety briefing

Violent crime in Marin County is the sharpest concern here, with the county recording 526.5 violent incidents per 100,000 residents in 2023 — a rate that warrants real attention for visitors arriving by car or shuttle. Muir Woods draws heavy day-trip crowds, and trailhead parking areas and shuttle stops are common spots where vehicle break-ins and opportunistic theft occur alongside more serious incidents.

Leave nothing visible in your car — bags, chargers, and even loose change should go in the trunk or travel with you entirely, since smash-and-grab theft tracks closely with busy trailhead turnover. The 13 flood events on record also mean that the creek-side trails can close fast after rain, so check the park's reservation and trail-status page the morning of your visit and pack waterproof footwear if any rain is in the forecast. Arriving early via the reserved shuttle rather than driving reduces both parking exposure and weather-related trail crowding.

About Muir Woods National Monument

Walk among old growth coast redwoods, cooling their roots in the fresh water of Redwood Creek and lifting their crowns to reach the sun and fog. Federally protected as a National Monument since 1908, this primeval forest is both refuge and laboratory, revealing our relationship with the living landscape. What will you discover in Muir Woods?

Weather

The coast redwood forest is cool most times of the year with temperatures ranging from 40 - 70 F/ 4 - 21 C. Always come prepared with layers. From late October to early May, expect cool weather & possible rain. Summer months (June-August) can be warmer, but it is generally cool and dry. Expect heavy fog in the morning, burning off in the afternoon. Often, the fall (September-October) is the warmest time of year.
