Safety briefing

The most pressing concern at William Howard Taft National Historic Site is the surrounding urban environment: Hamilton County logged a violent crime rate of 315.6 per 100,000 residents in 2023, well above national averages. This historic site sits in a dense Cincinnati neighborhood, meaning visitors are exposed to city-level risk rather than the remote-wilderness profile most campers expect. Weather adds a secondary layer, with 10 flash flood events and 9 thunderstorm wind incidents recorded in the county.

Keep valuables out of sight and lock your vehicle every time you step away, even briefly — smash-and-grab incidents are common in urban park settings. When storms roll in, avoid underpasses and low-lying streets near the site, as the flash flood history here is real; a packable rain poncho matters less than knowing your exit route to higher ground. Check the NWS Cincinnati forecast each morning, since those 9 wind events signal fast-moving squalls that can arrive with little warning.
