Safety briefing

Thunderstorm wind is the standout hazard at Vicksburg National Military Park, with 13 recorded events in Warren County driving nearly two-thirds of all logged weather incidents. Those storms also brought 3 tornadoes and 2 hail events, making fast-moving severe weather the clearest threat to an otherwise low-incident park experience. Violent crime in the surrounding county runs at 212.8 per 100,000 residents, a figure worth noting for visitors planning to venture into the city of Vicksburg after dark.

When thunderstorms are in the forecast, move your vehicle away from the park's large open-ridge monument areas and tree lines, which funnel wind gusts and become lightning targets. Keep a NOAA weather radio or a reliable alert app running — cell signals can lag when storms move fast across the Mississippi River corridor. For evening trips into downtown Vicksburg, stick to well-lit commercial blocks and return to camp before storms typically build in the late afternoon hours.

About Vicksburg National Military Park

To Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Vicksburg was the "nailhead that holds the South's two halves together." President Abraham Lincoln remarked "Vicksburg is the key" to victory, and could be the north's lifeline into the south. As the federals closed in on the Fortress City, they were met by a ring of forts with over 170 cannon. The resulting battle would determine the war's outcome.

Weather
