Safety briefing

The dominant safety concern at Thomas Stone National Historic Site is the surrounding Charles County area's violent crime rate, recorded at 446.8 incidents per 100,000 residents in 2023 — well above national averages. Weather plays a secondary role, with 9 thunderstorm wind events logged in the county, along with isolated flood and hail incidents that can develop quickly during summer afternoons.

When visiting, park in well-lit, visible areas and avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle, as property-related offenses tend to follow elevated violent crime patterns. For the thunderstorm risk, check the NOAA hourly forecast before arrival and keep a weather radio or alert app active on your phone; if winds pick up suddenly, move away from mature trees and seek shelter inside a hard-sided vehicle rather than a tent or open pavilion. A rain layer and sturdy footwear are practical given the flood potential on low-lying paths.
