Safety briefing

The dominant concern at Stones River National Battlefield isn't weather — it's the surrounding community's violent crime rate. Rutherford County logged 646.1 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2023, a figure well above the national average, and the battlefield's location within an urban/suburban corridor means visitors share that risk environment. Day-trippers and overnight RV travelers should factor this into where and how they park and stage their gear.

Keep valuables out of sight in locked vehicles, and if you're arriving in an RV, choose well-lit, high-traffic pull-offs rather than isolated edges of the lot. On the weather side, 10 recorded thunderstorm wind events and 2 tornadoes in the county mean afternoon storms can move in fast — download the NOAA Weather app and set a county-level alert before you arrive so you're not caught on open ground when conditions shift.
