Montezuma County's violent crime rate of 493.9 per 100,000 residents is the sharpest safety concern for visitors to Mesa Verde, running notably higher than the national average and warranting real attention for campers staying overnight near gateway towns like Cortez. While the park's recorded natural hazards are relatively modest — three debris flow events and one thunderstorm wind event logged — crime in the surrounding county is the data point families shouldn't overlook.
When driving into the park or stopping in Cortez for supplies, keep valuables out of sight and lock your vehicle even for short stops, as car break-ins tend to track with elevated property and violent crime rates. At your campsite, use a lockable storage box for gear left outside overnight rather than leaving bags or electronics visible in your tent vestibule. Plan fuel and grocery stops before dark so you're not navigating unfamiliar commercial strips late at night.
