Safety briefing

Thunderstorms and flooding represent the sharpest safety concern at Everglades National Park, with county records logging 3 flood events and 3 tornadoes in recent years alongside thunderstorm wind activity. The park's flat, open terrain offers almost no natural shelter when storms roll in fast off the Gulf, and standing water can appear — and deepen — with little warning across low-lying campsites and trail corridors. Monroe County's violent crime rate of 286.7 per 100,000 is also worth noting, particularly for travelers using remote parking areas.

When thunderstorms build — and in South Florida they build quickly — move off open water and away from lone trees immediately, and take shelter in a hard-sided vehicle rather than a tent. Pack waterproof dry bags for electronics and sleeping gear, since flooded ground can soak a tent floor in minutes. For campsite security, keep valuables locked in your vehicle, especially overnight at trailhead lots.
